Imam al-Mahdi (a.s) was born on the 15th Sha'ban 255 A.H. in Samarra, Iraq. He became the Imam when his father was Martyred in 260 A.H. Imam al-Mahdi (a.s) was only 5 years old when he went into ghaibat' (concealment). The Imam's ghaibat was divided into two periods:
Ghaibat-us-Sughra and
Ghaibat-ul-Kubra.

This is the time to spread the name and fill the whole world with the remembrance of Hazrat (a.s.) to invite the people towards his intellectual revolution to create the conditions favourable for his reappearance so that he (a.s.) may fill the earth with the sweet scent of his reappearance and the buds of, belief may bloom in the garden of his universal kingdom. Duties of Shias towards Imam-e-Zamana (A.S.) |

A momin should always mention Imam (A.S.) with the best of the titles. For example, Hujjat, Qaem, Mahdi, Sahibul Amr and Sahibuz-Zaman etc. He should refrain from uttering his actual name, which is the name of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.): (M - H - M - D).

A well known tradition narrated both by the Sunnis and the Shias in 92 different books proclaims: Anyone who dies without having recognised the Imam Zamana (aj) (the contemporary Imam), will die the death of ignorance. The word "death" in this hadith is interpreted by the Ulama as the end of this mortal life.

Sadaqah is derived from the word Sadq i.e. to be righteous, truthful, alms-giving. We will focus our attention on its third meaning i.e. alms-giving and discuss about it. Whenever supplications are made for the health and well-being of Hazrat Mahdi (A. S.) or charity is paid on his behalf then some people raise the question. 'It is because of his majestic self that the whole world is safe and secure, only because of his blissful presence this universe is thriving, then what does praying for him imply'? This whole Universe, earth and skies survive because of him, then why to give charity on his behalf? Let us examine this question in the following paragraphs.

Thus Quran and traditions alike, exhort the Muslims to secure some arbitrator in order to gain proximity with Allah, and achieve eternal deliverance. Why seek mediation of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.)? Any Shia is bound to think, 'What is the rationale for us to seek mediation of our Imam?' There are several facets to this question.
